Description

The International Federation of Journalists describes itself as the global voice of journalists. Founded in 1926, it says it is the world’s largest organisation of journalists. It represents around 600,000 media professionals through 187 unions and associations in more than 148 countries.

The IFJ campaigns for the safety and rights of journalists and media workers worldwide. It publishes an annual report counting media professionals killed each year, recording 128 deaths in 2025. It urges governments to investigate and prosecute those who intimidate, harass or kill journalists, and to pass enforceable laws protecting them.

The federation runs campaigns responding to specific crises, including the protection of journalists covering the war in Gaza and solidarity fundraising for journalists working in Ukraine. It also arranges a travel insurance scheme for journalists and media workers on assignment in high-risk locations. Through its network of national and regional unions, the IFJ advocates on behalf of journalists to governments and institutions around the world.
