The Guardian

The Guardian is a global news organisation that has been in operation since 1821. It describes its mission as delivering fearless, investigative journalism that gives a voice to the powerless and holds power to account. It is published by Guardian News and Media, part of Guardian Media Group.

In 1936 the paper’s proprietor transferred his family’s stake to a group of trustees, forming the Scott Trust, which created an independent ownership structure. The Scott Trust is the sole shareholder of Guardian Media Group. A linked endowment fund provides financial returns that support the journalism, so all surplus is reinvested rather than paid to a proprietor or shareholders.

The organisation is reader funded, with more than a million recurring digital supporters from over 180 countries. It is also supported by print subscriptions, patron schemes and donations. Its journalists cover politics, the environment, science, social justice, sport and culture. They produce investigations, breaking news, opinion writing, podcasts, video documentaries and visuals, with editions produced by teams in the UK, US and Australia.

Its investigations have included the Windrush revelations, Cambridge Analytica, the Snowden Files, the Panama, Paradise and Pandora Papers, and the Pegasus Project.
