Institute for Public Policy Research

Description

The Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) is a grant-funded policy research institute in Namibia. It was officially launched in April 2001 as a not-for-profit organization. Its mission is to deliver independent, analytical, critical yet constructive research into the social, political and economic issues that affect development in Namibia. It works from the belief that free and critical debate, informed by quality research, promotes development.

IPPR is autonomous of government, political parties, business, trade unions and other interest groups. It is governed by a Board of Directors drawn from different areas of Namibian society. Its work is divided into three core areas: democracy and governance research, energy and climate change research, and public policy analysis.

Since 2014 it has received institutional support from the Hanns Seidel Foundation, which funds three staff posts. The Foundation has backed research publications on topics such as minerals beneficiation, electoral integrity, the blue economy and media sustainability in the digital age. Current Foundation-supported work includes a Quarterly Economic Review, a publication tracking public procurement, the Green Hydrogen Monitor, and a Namibian fact-checking service.

Other donors and partners that have supported IPPR’s work include the European Union, the International Budget Partnership, Africa Check, the International Fact-Checking Network, the World Economic Forum, the Embassy of Ireland, the Canadian Fund for Local Initiatives, the Oak Foundation, Transparency International, Climate Strategies, and the Pooled Fund on International Energy.
