Description

Indiana Forest Alliance is a nonprofit environmental organization that works to preserve and restore Indiana’s native hardwood forests. It was founded in 1996 as a coalition of seven groups to coordinate protection of the Hoosier National Forest and state forests. It is based in Indianapolis, Indiana.

The organization advocates for forest protection, carries out scientific research and works to expand public forest land. Its Ecoblitz project is a multi-year survey of biological diversity in Indiana’s hardwood forests, and it monitors and advocates for endangered species such as the Eastern hellbender in the Blue River. It has taken the US Forest Service to federal court to stop logging plans in the Hoosier National Forest and organizes grassroots opposition to similar plans elsewhere.

It also runs campaigns such as Forests for Indy, which works to establish urban forest preserves in Indianapolis, and Wild Indiana, which seeks to protect wild areas within state forests. It works to expand the Charles Deam Wilderness and establish a new national recreation area.
