Environmental Foundation Limited

Description

Environmental Foundation Limited, known as EFL, is a public interest litigation and environmental conservation organization in Sri Lanka. It was established in 1981 and works to protect and conserve the natural environment through litigation, advocacy, awareness and youth engagement.

EFL has brought several landmark cases. It won a 2005 case to keep Galle Face Green as a public beach, and joined the Wildlife and Nature Protection Society in a successful fundamental rights case against illegal forest clearing and biofuel planting near Yala National Park. A 2014 case over air pollution in Colombo led to new vehicle emission testing, and another case resulted in the cancellation of a proposed coal power plant.

The foundation advocates for a ban on single-use plastics, works to restore water quality in the Kelani River, and campaigns against removing protection from state forests and other sensitive areas. It litigates against illegal tourism and deforestation in places such as Wilpattu National Park, promotes sustainable PET recycling and clean energy, and opposes illegal mining. EFL also publishes conservation research and runs monthly panel discussions plus awareness sessions and workshops for schools, universities and the public.
