Environmental Organizations Colombia

Description

Fundación ProAves is a nonprofit environmental organization in Colombia, founded in 1998, dedicated to conserving birds of conservation concern and their habitats. It also works to protect mammals, amphibians, reptiles and other wildlife native to the country. The foundation runs a network of nature reserves across Colombia to safeguard threatened species and ecosystems.

ProAves manages 27 natural reserves in 14 departments of Colombia, protecting more than 28,000 hectares of key ecosystems. Its work has helped conserve over two thirds of Colombia’s bird species, most of the country’s endemic birds, and a large share of its globally threatened terrestrial species. The foundation also works with amphibians and reptiles at risk of extinction.

Its main strategies are scientific research, conservation of natural reserves, and environmental education. ProAves has discovered new species of trees and contributed to reforestation and habitat restoration in its reserves. It currently holds the presidency of Colombia’s National Committee of IUCN Members.
