Hnutí DUHA

Description

Hnutí DUHA, known internationally as Friends of the Earth Czech Republic, is an environmental movement in the Czech Republic. It was founded in Brno in 1989 by a group of students and has been a member of Friends of the Earth International since 1994. The organization works for a free, democratic society that respects nature and provides a clean, healthy environment for everyone.

Hnutí DUHA advocates for strong environmental laws at national and local level, helps households live sustainably and save energy, and bases its campaigns on scientific research. It has helped protect the Šumava National Park, blocked an unfair electricity pricing reform, and opposed the expansion of coal mining in northern Bohemia. Since 1995 a local group has worked to protect wolves, lynx and bears, and the organization runs a directory connecting consumers with local farmers.

The organization also provides environmental impact assessments for legislation and development projects, promotes renewable energy, and has helped delay or cancel large construction and mining projects. It publishes the journal Sedmá generace and operates from offices in Brno and Prague with branches across the country. It is a member of Friends of the Earth Europe and relies on individual donors, foundations and public support rather than funding from industry.
