Re:Baltica

Description

Re:Baltica is a non-profit organization that describes itself as the Baltic Center for Investigative Journalism. It was founded in August 2011 and is based in Riga, Latvia. It produces long-term, in-depth investigative reporting on socially important issues across the Baltic region, including corruption, crime, finances, entrepreneurship, health, human rights and disinformation.

Its journalism aims to encourage transparency and reform. Its investigations have been cited by international outlets such as The Guardian, The Washington Post, Financial Times and the BBC. Rather than building its own large audience, Re:Baltica distributes its investigations through other media outlets in Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania and beyond. It makes its work freely available and invites other newsrooms to republish it, asking only to be credited.

Through its fact-checking and social media research hub, Re:Check, it runs a media literacy program taught in schools. It also offers training on investigative journalism and news management, in collaboration with organizations such as the OSCE, UNESCO and the Thomson Reuters Foundation. Staff also work as media experts in international election observation missions.

The organization is run by a small team of journalists, editors and researchers. It is supported by volunteers including an illustrator, a designer and a data specialist, and overseen by a board of journalists and media professionals. It is funded by a mix of donations, grants and self-earned income. In 2024 its total revenue was 480,236 euros, made up of small individual and institutional donations, competitively awarded projects such as BECID, and grants and payments from bodies including the International Press Institute, META and Latvian public broadcasters.
