Environmental Organizations Ireland

Description

Gluaiseacht is an Irish environmental, peace and social justice group whose name means “movement” in Irish. It is a non-hierarchical climate justice movement bringing together grassroots organisations and individuals from across Ireland. It practices non-violent resistance to the current form of capitalist globalisation.

The group grew out of a network of Ecological and One World Societies at universities and colleges throughout Ireland. It is a member of the Irish Environmental Network. It has taken part in anti-nuclear protests at the Trident submarine base in Faslane, Scotland, and at the Sellafield nuclear plant.

Gluaiseacht organised the 2002 Ecotopia gathering, an annual summer camp for activists in Europe, together with European Youth For Action. It has more recently run youth field schools with the land movement group Talamh Beo to support a growing youth land movement in Ireland. It continues to campaign on environmental and energy issues in Ireland, including submissions opposing new gas power plants.
