Bat Conservation International
Description
Bat Conservation International is a nonprofit organization working to end bat extinctions worldwide.
Founded in 1982, it is headquartered in Austin, Texas, and has grown into a globally recognized conservation group with members in dozens of countries. It combines science, technology and training to protect bats and their habitats. Its work is guided by a strategic plan built around four goals: intervening for endangered species, protecting and restoring landscapes, conducting high-priority research, and inspiring people through experience.
The organization researches and addresses threats to bats, including white-nose syndrome, wind turbine mortality, and disturbance of roosts and caves. It works to protect megapopulations, large colonies that can number in the millions, by purchasing land with important caves and using education to prevent eradication of roosts. It partners with government agencies such as the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and with national and international nonprofits.
Bat Conservation International also engages in public policy, opposing legislation it sees as harmful to threatened and endangered bat species.
