Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect

Description

The Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect is an international advocacy organization that works to prevent genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity.

It was established in 2008 by supportive governments, leading human rights figures such as Kofi Annan, Gareth Evans and Mary Robinson, and five international non-governmental organizations, to advance the Responsibility to Protect principle adopted by the United Nations in 2005. It has offices in New York and Geneva.

The Global Centre mobilizes the international community to act when populations face mass atrocity risk, and pushes UN bodies such as the Security Council, Human Rights Council and General Assembly to prevent and respond to such crimes. It conducts research and analysis to frame country situations through an atrocity prevention lens, and builds government and civil society capacity to respond to threats through training and institution building.

It publishes flagship analysis such as R2P Monitor and Atrocity Alert, coordinates the Global Network of R2P Focal Points, and works with affected communities, NGOs, governments and regional bodies to operationalize the Responsibility to Protect.
