Description

The European Whistleblowing Institute, EWI, works to strengthen how whistleblowers are supported, understood and protected across Europe. It is built on the belief that society benefits when organisations get better at surfacing the truth. EWI describes whistleblowers as people inside organisations who speak up against wrongdoing. They guard the public interest and inform the public when power is abused. EWI aims to help establish shared European norms for how they are treated.

The institute’s mission is to amplify whistleblower thinking, insights and ideas by building expertise and capacity across Europe. It aims to become the leading European institute for advancing whistleblower empowerment, acceptance and safeguarding. It focuses on education, research and policy advice.

EWI presents itself as a place where knowledge from different fields is combined. Its research can draw on direct access to relevant stakeholders. Organisations can benefit from state-of-the-art, data-based research that bridges public and private sector knowledge.

EWI works to establish a recognised legal profession around whistleblowing in Europe. Organisations with fifty or more employees are required to appoint a whistleblower officer. EWI aims to help professionals and organisations build the capacity needed to meet that requirement.
