Description
foodwatch is a non-profit campaigning organization that works to secure safe, healthy and affordable food for everyone. It describes itself as a citizen-based watchdog in the food sector. It gives consumers a voice and pushes for transparency and for food that harms neither people nor the environment.
It uncovers and challenges food industry practices that violate consumers’ rights or interests. It aims to get political decision makers to close loopholes in European and national food policy. Its methods include conducting research, exposing scandals, mobilising consumers and lobbying governments, acting as a counterweight to the power of the food industry. It states its campaigns have led to legal challenges and changes in industry practice and government policy.
Any person can become a foodwatch supporter and contribute to its work. foodwatch says it is wholly independent of state and food industry influence. It does not accept funding from governments, the food industry or the EU. It operates at national and European level, with offices in Germany, France, Austria and the Netherlands.
The legal entity foodwatch e.V. is registered as a charitable organisation in Germany, based in Berlin, and listed on the Charlottenburg district court’s register of charitable organisations. Dr. Chris Methmann is the authorized representative of the board of directors.
