Environment Victoria

Description

Environment Victoria is an independent charity and Victoria’s peak non-government environmental organisation in Australia.

It campaigns for climate action and a sustainable society that protects nature, working across three main areas: shifting Victoria to clean energy, protecting rivers and natural habitats, and building community power for environmental change. It works in collaboration with more than 150 groups across Australia, and its Action Network organises volunteers to engage communities and political candidates. It also supports First Nations communities in efforts for land justice and environmental outcomes.

The organisation was formed in 1969 as the Conservation Council of Victoria, after a campaign to save the Little Desert from subdivision, and took its current name in 1994. It is funded by donations, memberships, grants and sponsorships, and counts more than 200,000 individual supporters and 40 grassroots member groups. Past successes cited include water conservation laws, the creation of national parks, and the closure of a major coal-fired power station.
