Ende Gelände

Description

Ende Gelände is a German civil disobedience movement that occupies coal and gas infrastructure to demand an end to fossil fuels.

It formed as a broad alliance of anti-nuclear and anti-coal groups, climate camp organizers, the Hambach Forest occupation, grassroots and citizens’ initiatives, larger environmental organizations and left-wing political groups. Its members share the conviction that climate protection must be taken into their own hands, and they want to send a visible signal for a real shift toward genuine climate protection through mass civil disobedience. According to the English Wikipedia article, the movement has organized annual mass blockades of coal mines in the Rhineland, Lusatia and Leipzig regions since 2015, and since 2017 has taken part in similar protests against coal and fracking in Poland, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic.

It is organized into local and working groups across Germany and other European countries, coordinating through regular meetings, action trainings and a legal support structure for people facing prosecution for civil disobedience. It runs campaigns and communications through press, social media, editorial and international contact channels, and coordinates anti-repression support tied to its various day-of-action years. It is not a registered NGO and does not receive regular institutional funding, relying instead on volunteers and donations.
