Description

Maine Island Trail Association is a membership organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the wild islands of coastal Maine.

It administers the Maine Island Trail, a recreational water trail running the length of the Maine coast, connecting island and mainland sites for day visits and overnight camping. MITA does not own the land itself; it supports land trusts and private landowners in caring for the islands, and in exchange provides public access. Its members, who include paddlers, sailors, powerboaters and non-boaters, help keep the trail healthy through volunteer stewardship and support, guided by low-impact recreation guidelines.

The association was co-founded in 1988 by David Getchell Sr., following a state survey of Maine’s uninhabited coastal islands. It is based in Portland, Maine, and has grown to thousands of members.
