Earthlife Africa

Description

Earthlife Africa is a South African environmental and anti-nuclear organisation founded in Johannesburg in 1988. It began as a radical, anti-apartheid activist group modelled loosely on Greenpeace, and its constitution was formally adopted at its first national conference in 1989. It has since grown to include branches in Cape Town, eThekwini and Windhoek, Namibia, with each branch autonomous but linked by a shared statement of belief.

The organisation seeks a society that lives within ecological limits, with resources shared equitably and without exploiting people or the environment. It campaigns on nuclear energy, toxic waste and climate change, and has challenged incinerator proposals, nuclear procurement and coal power projects through advocacy and litigation. Its Sustainable Energy and Climate Change Project is its largest current campaign, and it played a role in introducing environmental justice as a concept in South Africa in the early 1990s.

Earthlife Africa is a largely volunteer-driven organisation, though some branches have secured funding to staff specific campaigns. It offers individual, family and unwaged membership for people who want to take part in its campaigns and activities.
