DarkSky International

Description

DarkSky International is a nonprofit working to reduce light pollution and protect the night sky.

It was incorporated in the United States in 1988, formerly known as the International Dark-Sky Association. The organization certifies International Dark Sky Places, such as parks, communities, sanctuaries and reserves, that commit to responsible outdoor lighting. It also certifies lighting products and designs through its Fixture Seal of Approval program.

DarkSky educates the public, policymakers and industry about how excessive artificial light harms people, wildlife and the climate. It works through more than 70 chapters and thousands of volunteer Advocates and Delegates around the world, and partners with universities, businesses, community groups and other nonprofits. It also helps communities and professionals write lighting codes and ordinances that cut light pollution.

The organization is headquartered in Tucson, Arizona, and describes itself as a global authority on light pollution.
