Butterfly Conservation

Description

Butterfly Conservation is a UK-wide charity dedicated to conserving butterflies, moths and the wider environment.

It uses research to advise landowners and managers on how to conserve and restore habitats for butterflies and moths, and it runs recovery programmes for more than 100 threatened species of Lepidoptera. The charity operates some of the world’s largest butterfly and moth recording schemes, including the citizen-science Big Butterfly Count, which together have gathered more than 60 million records. It manages 26 nature reserves and is involved in a number of landscape-scale habitat projects across the UK.

Butterfly Conservation has more than 40,000 members and over 30 volunteer-led branches across the UK, plus the European Butterflies Group. It was formed in 1968 as the British Butterfly Conservation Society and took its current name in 2003. Its head office is in East Lulworth, Dorset, with further offices in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
