Blue Mountains Conservation Society

Description

The Blue Mountains Conservation Society is a voluntary incorporated organisation of more than nine hundred paid-up members helping to conserve the World Heritage Blue Mountains region in New South Wales, Australia.

Its mission is to help protect, conserve and advocate for the natural environment of the Greater Blue Mountains. It is governed by a management committee, with conservation work carried out through subcommittees and campaigns, and also runs a native plant nursery and several bushwalking groups. Its work covers threatened species, climate change, environmental weeds and other conservation campaigns, and it has historically campaigned against mining, pine plantations and river pollution, and for World Heritage listing of the Blue Mountains.

The Society formed in 1961 as the Katoomba and District Fauna and Flora Protection Society, and took its current name in 1996 when the Upper and Lower Blue Mountains conservation societies merged. It continues to run ongoing campaigns, including opposition to raising the Warragamba Dam wall.
