Population Matters

Description

Population Matters is a UK-based charity that works on the links between human population growth, environmental sustainability and human rights. It was founded in 1991 as the Optimum Population Trust and adopted its current name in 2011. It is based in London.

The organisation works to address the causes and effects of population growth and unsustainable resource consumption, aiming for a fairer and more sustainable world. It carries out evidence-based research and data-driven advocacy, and shares its analysis with partners, policymakers and decision-makers. It promotes voluntary, rights-based solutions, including gender equality, access to family planning and education, rather than coercive population control.

Through its Empower to Plan initiative, it funds community-led projects that improve access to reproductive health services and education and address climate injustice. It also contributes to policy discussions on sustainability and population. It is a member of the IUCN, holds consultative status at the UN Economic and Social Council, and belongs to the Wellbeing Economy Alliance.
