Description

Chebeague and Cumberland Land Trust is a member-supported land conservation organization serving Cumberland and Chebeague Island, Maine.

It works to permanently conserve and steward natural resources across island and mainland communities. Its tasks include protecting natural resources, expanding public access to nature, recreation and education, and supporting healthy, sustainable communities. It is run by a small staff and a volunteer board of residents from both towns, and it owns and cares for preserves and trail networks.

The trust was founded in 1987, originally as the Cumberland Mainland & Islands Trust, part of a nationwide land conservation movement. It took its current name after Chebeague Island seceded from Cumberland in 2007. Since its founding it has completed dozens of conservation projects, protecting over 1,100 acres, and in 2012 it became one of the few all-volunteer land trusts to earn national accreditation.
