BirdLife Australia
Description
BirdLife Australia is Australia’s largest bird conservation charity, working to stop bird extinctions and restore nature.
It works locally, nationally and globally to drive the recovery of threatened birds and their habitats, combining research, habitat restoration, monitoring, policy advocacy, partnerships and community engagement. It collaborates with experts, partners with landholders, lobbies governments and runs citizen-science programs such as Birdata and the Aussie Backyard Bird Count to track bird populations. Its programs cover woodland birds, migratory shorebirds, key biodiversity areas, urban birds, beach-nesting birds, birds on farms and threatened mallee birds, alongside emergency interventions for species at greatest risk.
The charity is the Australian national partner of BirdLife International and owns or leases several reserves and bird observatories, including Gluepot Reserve and the Clarkesdale Bird Sanctuary. It operates a network of more than 30 volunteer-led regional branches and several special interest groups across the country. It was formed through the 2012 merger of Bird Observation and Conservation Australia and Birds Australia, and it is made up of hundreds of thousands of members, volunteers and supporters.
BirdLife Australia is based in Victoria and operates across Australia, with offices including in Sydney and Perth.
