Awareness Against Human Trafficking

Awareness Against Human Trafficking, known as HAART, is a Kenyan non-governmental organization that fights human trafficking.

It was founded in 2010, when Kenya was becoming a hub for trafficking in persons in East Africa. Since then it has identified and assisted more than a thousand victims, and has run hundreds of grassroots workshops reaching over a hundred thousand people across the region.

HAART works on five levels: preventing trafficking through awareness campaigns and a youth programme, protecting and assisting survivors with counselling, shelter, medical care, legal aid and economic support, and pushing for the prosecution of traffickers together with local authorities. It also works on policy through partnerships with other anti-trafficking networks, and carries out research, including a study on trafficking of internally displaced people in Kenya. The organization has added arts-based projects, using photography and other media to raise awareness of survivors’ experiences.

Its team includes staff and volunteers trained in law, psychology, public health, social work, education and international development.
