Description

Átlátszó is a Hungarian investigative journalism and watchdog outlet. It is published by atlatszo.hu Közhasznú Nonprofit Kft, a public-benefit nonprofit company based in Budapest. Its owners include Bodoky Tamás, who also serves as its editor-in-chief and managing director.

Its newsroom includes journalists, data visualisation specialists, video producers, a legal director and an in-house lawyer. It publishes daily reporting on public spending, corruption, the environment, public affairs and current events across Hungary. It also maintains a freedom-of-information request tool.

It has received numerous domestic and international journalism awards over the years, including a Pulitzer Memorial Prize for its newsroom, a Transparency-Soma Prize, and various Hungarian press and quality journalism awards. Its journalists have also been recognised individually for investigative and data journalism work.

Átlátszó is a member of international investigative journalism networks, including the Global Investigative Journalism Network, the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project, the European Data Journalism Network and VSquare. It also works with domestic partners such as K-Monitor, the Hungarian Helsinki Committee, Political Capital, Transparency International Hungary and the Médiafórum Association, whose ethical guidelines it follows.

Its funding comes from a wide range of institutional donors, past and present. These include the Open Society Foundations, the National Endowment for Democracy, the Sigrid Rausing Trust, Journalismfund Europe, Civitates, the Google Digital News Innovation Fund and the Visegrad Fund. It also relies on bank transfers, donations and 1 percent tax designations from supporters.
