Description

The Bureau of Investigative Journalism is an independent, not-for-profit organisation based in London that holds power to account through investigative journalism. It was founded in 2010 by David and Elaine Potter.

Its mission is to keep democracy strong and societies more just. It does this through in-depth, rigorous investigations that go beyond short-term news cycles, led by facts rather than political or corporate agendas. It aims to drive real change rather than simply generate clicks. It states its work is guided by the values of being just, honest, courageous, inclusive and collaborative.

The Bureau investigates specific subject areas rather than operating as a general newsroom. These include the environment, big tech, global health, family courts, human rights, corporations, justice, state scrutiny, and public-relations spin. It also runs Bureau Local, a project bringing accountability journalism to local communities in the UK.

It relies on donations to fund its reporting. It accepts story tips and works with whistleblowers and journalists. It is a member of Impress, adhering to its standards code, and of the Global Investigative Reporting Network.
