Arbor Day Foundation
Description
The Arbor Day Foundation is an American nonprofit membership organization dedicated to planting trees around the world.
Founded in 1972, it grew out of the centennial of the first Arbor Day observance in 1872, started by John Rosenow to plant trees and teach people why they matter. It now has more than one million members and has planted more than 500 million trees in neighborhoods, communities, cities and forests worldwide. It works with businesses, communities and individuals, combining local knowledge with data and GIS mapping to plant where trees are needed most.
Its programs include a global reforestation program that has replanted more than 108 million trees lost to fire, insects, disease and weather. The Tree City USA program, founded in 1976 with the National Association of State Foresters and the U.S. Forest Service, helps communities manage and expand their public trees. It also runs disaster recovery planting, corporate partnerships for sustainability goals, and a carbon removal subsidiary, Arbor Day Carbon.
The Foundation raises support through membership, donations and corporate partnerships, and operates Arbor Day Farm, an attraction and event site in Nebraska City, Nebraska.
