Amnesty Nepal

Amnesty International Nepal, also known as Amnesty Nepal, is the Nepal section of Amnesty International, the global human rights movement. It was founded in 1969 by lawyer Nutan Thapaliya.

It gained recognition as a section of Amnesty International in 1971, was dissolved during Nepal’s Panchayat regime in 1982, and continued at the membership level until it was recognised again as a section in 1993, after the restoration of democracy.

Amnesty Nepal undertakes research and action-focused advocacy campaigns to prevent and end human rights abuses, working through its members and volunteer Groups and Youth Networks across all seven provinces of Nepal. It is a membership-based organisation with over seven thousand active members, governed by an annually elected General Assembly and a National Board, with day-to-day work carried out by a National Secretariat.

Its work covers women’s, children’s, minorities’ and indigenous rights, ending torture, abolishing the death penalty, the rights of refugees and of prisoners of conscience, and the protection of human dignity. It campaigns through letter-writing, media work and public demonstrations, and it says it is financed by fees and donations from its membership rather than governments.
