Centre for Minority Rights Development

Description

The Centre for Minority Rights Development, known as CEMIRIDE, is a non-profit organization in Kenya. It advocates for the rights of minorities and indigenous peoples, including pastoralist, forest and fisher communities.

CEMIRIDE was founded in 2001 to strengthen the capacity of these communities to advocate for their own rights. Its establishment was prompted by the denial of citizenship rights to members of Kenya’s Nubian community. The organization works to raise awareness of the existence and violation of minority and indigenous rights and to pursue redress, including through engagement with the Kenyan government.

CEMIRIDE organizes its work into programmes on governance, climate change and access to justice. These programmes support minority and indigenous communities across the country.
