Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay
Description
The Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay is a regional nonprofit that builds partnerships and consensus to protect and restore the Chesapeake Bay and its rivers and streams.
It brings together citizens, watershed groups, businesses, local governments and conservationists on collaborative restoration projects. It runs volunteer and education programs such as Project Clean Stream, an annual stream cleanup, and River Trends, which supports citizen scientists who monitor water quality. It has also organized River Sojourns, paddling trips that build environmental stewardship, and hosts an annual gathering of conservation professionals called the Chesapeake Watershed Forum.
On the ground, the Alliance coordinates restoration work including tree planting along streams, rain gardens, and its BayScapes and River Wise programs, which help homeowners and businesses create landscapes that conserve water and reduce pollution. It works with landowners and municipalities to sustain healthy forests near waterways.
The Alliance was founded in 1971. It has offices in Washington, D.C., Annapolis, Maryland, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and Richmond, Virginia, and works across the Chesapeake Bay watershed.
