African Centre for Media & Information Literacy
Description
The African Centre for Media and Information Literacy, AFRICMIL, is a non-government organisation working on media, information, research, advocacy and training in Nigeria and across Africa.
It promotes media and information literacy as a way to strengthen democracy, good governance and accountability. It aims to raise young, active citizens who question and reflect on information and stay alert to the role media plays in an orderly society.
A large part of its current work is whistleblower advocacy in Nigeria. It calls on lawmakers to pass a whistleblower protection law, urges agencies such as the anti-drug agency to adopt whistleblowing in their campaigns, and challenges officials on the treatment and protection of whistleblowers. It reports on recognition of Nigerian whistleblowers, such as the Ellsberg Whistleblower Award, and holds webinars and events on whistleblowing, accountability and citizenship.
Beyond whistleblowing, AFRICMIL runs media literacy programmes, youth media training, gender and anti-corruption initiatives, and dialogue and diversity projects, several aimed at students and young people in Nigeria.
