Wolf River Conservancy
Description
The Wolf River Conservancy is a non-profit land trust dedicated to protecting and enhancing the Wolf River and its watershed as a sustainable natural resource.
It conserves land along the river by accepting land donations, purchasing land and negotiating voluntary conservation agreements with landowners, then stewarding that land over time. It has helped protect more than 20,000 acres in the Wolf River corridor, including the Ghost River State Natural Area, and it is an accredited land trust through the Land Trust Alliance. Beyond land protection, it educates youth and the public, engages the community through the Wolf River Greenway multi-use path, and offers guided paddle trips.
The conservancy was founded in 1985 by volunteers who opposed a gravel mine along the river near Memphis, and it later became a land trust after helping secure the Ghost River section of the Wolf River in 1995. Its work runs along the Wolf River corridor from its origins in North Mississippi through Memphis, Tennessee, to its confluence with the Mississippi River, and it has around 1,500 members across West Tennessee. It is led by a board of directors and staff and advised by a group of trustees.
