Wild Salmon Center
Description
Wild Salmon Center is a conservation network of scientists and advocates working to protect wild salmon, steelhead, char and trout.
It was founded in 1992 and is headquartered in Portland, Oregon. It works with communities, businesses, governments and other non-profits to protect healthy salmon ecosystems across the North Pacific. Its programs run in Russia, Japan, Alaska, British Columbia, Washington State, Oregon and California.
The organization follows a salmon stronghold strategy, focused on protecting river ecosystems that still hold the most abundant and diverse wild salmon populations, such as the Kamchatka Peninsula, Sakhalin Island, British Columbia and Bristol Bay. It combines research, on the ground conservation work and advocacy to secure long term protection for wild fish. It also produces educational resources about salmon for schools and the public, and highlights threats from industrial development, dams, overfishing and climate change.
