Transparency International

Description

Transparency International is a global movement working in more than 100 countries to end corruption. It focuses on issues with the greatest impact on people’s lives. It works to hold the powerful to account, using advocacy, campaigning, and research to expose the systems and networks that let corruption thrive, and to demand greater transparency and integrity in public life.

Its stated mission is to stop corruption and promote transparency, accountability, and integrity across all sectors of society. It describes itself as independent, non-governmental, and not-for-profit. The movement dates to 1993.

It operates at three levels. Globally, it advocates on anti-corruption policy with bodies such as the Group of 20 and investigates grand corruption. Nationally, it works through more than 100 locally established, independent national chapters that push legislation and engage government ministries. Locally, it runs more than 60 Advocacy and Legal Advice Centres, which give people free and confidential legal advice and let them safely report corruption, access public information, and demand accountable government institutions.

The secretariat, Transparency International e.V., is based in Berlin, Germany. It is registered there as an association. A related body, Transparency International EU, is based in Brussels, Belgium, and works on EU-level advocacy.
