Transparency International Portugal
Description
Transparência e Integridade, doing business as Transparency International Portugal, is an independent, nonprofit civic association of public benefit. It is the Portuguese chapter of the global anti-corruption network Transparency International, present in more than 100 countries. It was created on 17 September 2010 and is recognised as a development NGO.
It is the Civil Society Focal Point of the Civil Society Pillar of the Community of Democracies, and a member of the Tax Justice Network. Working with citizens, institutions, and public and private firms, it fights corruption and promotes transparency, integrity and responsibility. It aims to strengthen democratic legality, good governance and genuine access to information, so citizens can be better informed and participate more fully in democratic life in Portugal.
Its work covers several areas. It carries out applied research into good governance and corruption, partnering with universities and research centres and supporting researchers and students. It regularly evaluates the implementation of international conventions and national and EU legislation on corruption, money laundering, terrorism financing, lobbying, conflicts of interest, and political financing. It runs education, training and awareness activities for different audiences, and organises campaigns and advocacy to mobilise people and institutions around anti-corruption reform.
Since 2011 it has operated a support and advice service for whistleblowers and victims of corruption. It helps people who report corruption, poor governance, conflicts of interest and collusion, and those facing barriers to justice. It also cooperates on development with partners in Portuguese-speaking countries through a network for good governance in the Lusophone world. It works with public integrity centres in Mozambique and São Tomé and Príncipe, and with academics and activists from Cape Verde, Angola, Guinea-Bissau and Timor-Leste, on institutional capacity-building and transparency in development aid.
The organisation is funded by membership fees, donations, and institutional donors including the European Commission, the Transparency International Secretariat, the Open Society Foundations, the Adessium Foundation and the JB Fernandes Memorial Trust. It is based in Lisbon, Portugal.
