Transparency International Italia

Transparency International Italia is the Italian national chapter of Transparency International, the global anti-corruption movement founded in Berlin in 1993. The Italian chapter was founded in 1996 by a mixed group of entrepreneurs, academics, officials and citizens in the aftermath of the Mani Pulite investigations. It works to prevent corruption and support its victims and witnesses across public administration, business and civil society.

It operates in Italy through research and analysis, advocacy, education, training and direct support for whistleblowers. Its ALAC service and the WhistleblowingIT platform assist people who want to report corruption. Its Business Integrity Forum, launched in 2015, promotes transparency and integrity in the private sector. Its education programme takes anti-corruption teaching into schools, companies and hospitals, and its civic monitoring work involves citizens in overseeing public integrity pacts.

The organization’s advocacy contributed to Italy’s first anti-corruption law in 2012, the 2017 law protecting whistleblowers, and the 2023 decree transposing the EU whistleblowing directive. It runs related sites on public-sector whistleblowing, public contract monitoring, money in politics, and open data. It publishes an annual report, financial statements and policy documents.

Transparency International Italia is a nonprofit association based in Milan, registered in Italy’s national register of Third Sector bodies. It is governed by an executive director, a board and an advisory structure, and funded in part by the European Commission and the Open Society Initiative for Europe.
