Transparency International Australia

Transparency International Australia is the national chapter of Transparency International, a global coalition against corruption operating in over 100 countries. Its mission is to tackle corruption by exposing illegal practices and unfair laws that weaken democracy. It uses evidence-based research to inform advocacy. It works with businesses, government agencies and community groups to close corruption loopholes.

It says everyone loses when corrupt politicians, business people or individuals steal shared resources or write rules that benefit themselves at others’ expense. It works to promote transparency and accountability so government and business operate with high standards of integrity. Its 2024 to 2028 strategy focuses on strengthening Australia’s democratic institutions. It calls for reforming federal electoral and lobbying laws, a national Whistleblower Protection Authority, stronger anti-money laundering laws, and an end to corporate secrecy.

It works to raise integrity standards in the mining and energy sectors as Australia moves to cleaner energy. It aims to help return corruption proceeds to affected Asia-Pacific communities. It supports civil society and transparency advocates across the region. It does not work on individual cases of corruption or provide direct support to people wanting to report crime or misconduct, but it operates an anonymous reporting tool through its partner Whispli and directs people to other relevant agencies.

It is a registered charity with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission. It is a member of Philanthropy Australia and an Affiliate Member of the Australian Council for International Development. It holds memberships in networks such as the Bribery Prevention Network, OECD Watch and the Whistleblowing International Network. It is based in Victoria.
