Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance

Description

The Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance is a wilderness preservation group working to protect Utah’s redrock desert wild lands.

It is the only independent organization working full time to defend America’s redrock wilderness from oil and gas development, road construction, off-road vehicle use and other threats. It promotes local and national recognition of the region’s wilderness character through research and public education. It supports administrative and legislative efforts to protect the Colorado Plateau’s wild places within the National Park and National Wilderness Preservation System, and pursues litigation to keep qualifying lands eligible for wilderness protection under federal law.

Its main campaign builds public support for America’s Red Rock Wilderness Act, a bill reintroduced in Congress every session since 1989. It has also supported the designation of Bears Ears National Monument and taken part in lawsuits challenging the reduction of Grand Staircase-Escalante and Bears Ears National Monuments. It has taken part in land bills protecting wilderness acreage in Washington County and Emery County, Utah.

The organization is based in Salt Lake City, Utah, with field offices in Washington, D.C. and Moab, Utah. It was founded in 1983 and is a partner in the Utah Wilderness Coalition.
