Description

SFLC.in is a donor-supported legal services organization in India that has united lawyers, policy analysts, technologists, business professionals, students and citizens to protect freedom in the digital world since 2010. It works to ensure Indian policymakers make informed and just decisions about technology, and promotes innovation and open access to knowledge by helping developers build free and open source software while protecting citizens’ privacy and civil liberties online.

It pursues this through education, original research, policy engagement and free legal services. SFLC.in holds special consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC) and is a society registered under India’s Societies Registration Act of 1860, operating across the country.

It has taken positions opposing software patents, defending free speech and privacy online, opposing the dilution of net neutrality, resisting Facebook’s Free Basics/Internet.org, and pushing for platform accountability. The organization describes itself as unaligned with any commercial or political interest group, guided instead by constitutional values, equality, accountability and the public interest in an open and free internet built on free and open source software.
