Description

AlgorithmWatch is a non-governmental, non-profit organization based in Berlin and Zurich. It works so that algorithms and artificial intelligence strengthen rather than weaken justice, human rights, democracy, and sustainability. The organization researches, reports on, and comments on automated decision-making systems, the technical processes that increasingly shape decisions in daily life.

AlgorithmWatch runs research projects that examine automated decision-making in specific fields, including sustainability, the COVID-19 pandemic, human resources, and social media platforms. It publishes journalistic investigations into how these systems are used and what happens when they fail, covering topics such as predictive policing, face recognition, and AI-generated content. It also produces position papers and expert analyses responding to political and regulatory developments, such as the EU’s Digital Services Act and AI Act.

The organization publishes reports, analyses, and working papers with a network of researchers and civil society experts. It has developed guidelines for using generative AI responsibly and runs a campaign to make algorithmic discrimination visible, encouraging people to report cases they encounter. AlgorithmWatch shares this work through its blog, journalistic stories, and position papers aimed at policymakers and the public.
