Sisters in Islam

Description

Sisters in Islam is a Malaysian organisation that promotes gender equality, justice and dignity for women within an Islamic framework, in Malaysia and globally.

It was formed in 1988 and registered as a non-governmental organisation in 1993 under the name SIS Forum Malaysia, with its head office in Petaling Jaya. The group interprets the Quran to challenge laws and policies that discriminate against women, addressing polygamy, child marriage, moral policing, the hijab and violence against women.

It runs Telenisa, a free legal advisory clinic on Islamic family law matters such as divorce, polygamy and maintenance of wife and children. It also carries out legal reform advocacy, publishes research, brochures and books, and holds workshops and international meetings to educate women on their rights.

Sisters in Islam campaigns on violence against women, Muslim family law, the impact of extremism on women and universal human rights frameworks, and publishes statements and reports on these issues.
