Robin Wood

Description

Robin Wood is a German grassroots environmental campaign group based in Hamburg.

It was founded in 1982 by former Greenpeace members who wanted a decentralised, autonomous organisation focused on German forest dieback and acid rain. It later broadened its work to tropical forest protection, mobility, energy policy and resource use. It organises through autonomous regional groups across Germany, decides its campaigns by grassroots democratic consensus among volunteers, and is financed mainly by donations and membership fees rather than corporate or state funding.

Robin Wood works through non-violent direct action, research and public campaigning rather than through litigation. It stages protests such as tree occupations, building climbs and banner displays to confront companies and governments over issues like coal power, nuclear energy, deforestation, aviation and rail privatisation. It also runs environmental education, publishes research and a magazine, and links environmental protection to social and climate justice. It has campaigned internationally too, including for the protection of Romania’s primary forests and the Nordic forests of Scandinavia and Canada.
