Environmental Organizations United States

Description

Ohio Citizen Action is a statewide grassroots advocacy organization in Ohio working for clean energy, utility accountability and the protection of democracy.

It was founded in Cleveland in 1975, originally as a coalition called the Ohio Public Interest Campaign, and took its current name in 1989 after becoming a membership organization. It has offices across Ohio and organizes across the state’s 88 counties, from cities to small towns and farm country.

The organization recruits and mobilizes members through door-to-door canvassing, phone outreach and online action, informing people about issues and building trust in their communities. It applies sustained public pressure to hold businesses and government accountable on issues affecting public health, the environment and consumer costs.

Over its history it has run right-to-know campaigns on industrial pollution, pressed utilities over rate increases, supported renewable energy and community choice in electricity, and campaigned against coal and gas pollution. It works to build durable coalitions across political lines toward a sustainable and equitable energy future.
