Nature Society Singapore

Description

Nature Society Singapore is a non-government, non-profit organisation working to preserve and promote appreciation of Singapore’s natural heritage and that of the surrounding region. It traces its roots to 1940 as the Malayan Nature Society, splitting off and re-registering as Nature Society Singapore in 1991. It is run largely by volunteers and depends on contributions from its over 800 members as well as companies, institutions and individuals.

The society advocates for biodiversity and habitat preservation in Singapore, using an evidence-based approach. It has led conservation successes including the creation of Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve, the protection of Lower Peirce forest from development, the restoration of Kranji Marshes and the preservation of the former railway land as the Green Corridor. It runs interest groups on birds, butterflies and insects, marine life, plants and other wildlife, and organises education programmes, guided walks and its annual Singapore Bird Race.

It offers membership, volunteering and corporate partnership opportunities, and hosts regular public events such as talks, birdwatching outings and tree-planting activities along the Rail Corridor.
