National Whistleblower Center

Description

The National Whistleblower Center (NWC) is a nonprofit based in Washington, DC. It describes itself as the leading organization dedicated to protecting and rewarding whistleblowers around the world. It assists whistleblowers in finding legal aid, advocates for stronger whistleblower protection laws, and educates the public about whistleblowers’ role in protecting democracy and the rule of law.

NWC does not give legal advice directly or make legal referrals by phone. Requests for legal assistance are reviewed by an attorney under attorney-client privilege. NWC’s work centers on three areas.

Through workshops and reports, it educates whistleblowers about their rights and directs them to further legal resources. It also runs advocacy campaigns, mobilizing grassroots supporters, congressional allies and other nonprofits. It has helped bring about the enactment of US whistleblower protection and reward laws, including the Dodd-Frank Act, the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, the Whistleblower Protection Enhancement Act and the Taxpayer First Act, as well as the recognition of National Whistleblower Day.

It has also campaigned internationally, including for stronger whistleblower protections within the European Union ahead of the EU Whistleblowing Directive’s implementation deadline. For over thirty years NWC has worked to educate the public and journalists on whistleblower laws in the United States and worldwide, including the False Claims Act, the Dodd-Frank Act and the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. It publishes reports, fact sheets and guest articles through its Whistleblower News Network.
