Malaysians Against Death Penalty and Torture

Malaysians Against Death Penalty & Torture, known as MADPET, is a Malaysian movement working for the abolition of the death penalty and torture.

It also campaigns on other human rights causes, including freedom of expression, the right to privacy, the right to a fair trial, and against abuse of power by police and other law enforcement officials. MADPET promotes human rights, human freedoms and justice in Malaysia and around the world. Its founding coordinators were Charles Hector, N. Surendran and Salbiah Ahmad.

MADPET calls for an end to torture and abuse of rights by police, an end to deaths in police custody and police shoot-to-kill incidents, greater safeguards for a fair trial, a right to a phone call and immediate access to a lawyer on arrest, and the repeal of laws that allow detention without trial. It is a founding member of the Anti-Death Penalty Asia Network, ADPAN, and has worked with the Malaysian Bar and other civil society groups on the campaign to abolish the death penalty.

MADPET also speaks out publicly on cases involving whistleblowers, human rights defenders and press freedom in Malaysia.
