Freedom from Torture

Description

Freedom from Torture is a British charity that helps people who have survived torture to heal, feel safe and rebuild their lives in the UK.

It was founded on Christmas Eve 1985 by Helen Bamber and Amnesty International volunteers, originally as the Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture. It has centres in London, Manchester and Glasgow.

Its therapists, doctors, lawyers and welfare advisors provide psychological rehabilitation, medical and psychological documentation of torture, and support with asylum cases and social welfare. It trains health, legal and policy professionals across the UK to work with torture survivors, and supports other organizations that deliver rehabilitation services.

The organization campaigns to expose torture and hold accountable the states responsible for it, and fights for fair treatment of people seeking safety in the UK after torture. It pursues strategic litigation and public campaigns, and places survivors at the center of its work through the survivor-led network Survivors Speak OUT.
