Katala Foundation

Description

Katala Foundation is a non-profit, non-governmental organization in the Philippines that protects and conserves threatened endemic wildlife, registered in 2002.

Its flagship focus is the critically endangered Philippine cockatoo, locally called Katala, through the Philippine Cockatoo Conservation Program running since 1998 on Palawan. It also works to conserve the Palawan Forest Turtle, the Palawan Pangolin, the Calamian Deer and the Balabac Mouse-deer, the last strongholds of which lie in Palawan. Its programs include nest protection, habitat restoration, conservation breeding, rescue and translocation of animals, and scientific research.

The foundation runs the Katala Institute of Ecology and Biodiversity Conservation, which combines conservation education, species rescue and applied research near threatened target species and ecosystems. It also carries out forest rehabilitation and protection work aimed at sequestering carbon and preserving wildlife habitat. It uses a participatory, ecosystemic approach, working closely with local communities, municipal governments and national conservation agencies.
