Libera

Description

Libera is an Italian network of associations, social cooperatives, movements, schools, trade unions, dioceses, parishes and scout groups. It works against mafias, corruption and illegality, for social justice, truth, transparency and democratic legality. Founded in 1995, its work rests on continuity, constructive proposals rather than mere indignation, and shared responsibility.

Libera is present across Italy through 20 regional coordinamenti, 75 provincial coordinamenti and 295 local presidi, and it belongs to Libera Internazionale, a network of 80 organizations in 35 countries across Europe, Africa and Latin America.

Its activities include education and training, such as the E!state Liberi summer camps on confiscated mafia assets, which involve over 4,000 young people yearly. It runs environmental projects with the Carabinieri Forestale and educational programs with more than 5,000 schools and university faculties.

Libera also cultivates historical memory of mafia victims through the annual 21 March Day of Memory and Commitment, when the names of innocent victims are read aloud across Italy and abroad.

On justice, it supports people who report crimes through Linea Libera, takes civil-party legal action in mafia trials, and carries out civic anti-corruption monitoring. It manages the social reuse of confiscated criminal assets through initiatives such as Beni Confiscati and ExtraLibera.

Internationally, Libera runs projects including PLACE in Africa, ALAS in Latin America and CHANCE in Europe. It has legal, fundraising, communication and membership offices at its Rome headquarters.
