Description

The Koeberg Alert Alliance is a South African anti-nuclear activist group opposed to nuclear reactors at Koeberg, near Cape Town.

It began in 1983 as a local campaign called Stop Koeberg against the construction of the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station, and was for years allied with the broader democratic and anti-apartheid movement. It was revived at the end of 2009 in response to renewed government plans for further nuclear reactors. It currently organises anti-nuclear campaigns, takes part in public participation processes on nuclear power, and lobbies decision makers.

The Alliance has filed access to information requests, such as one for the Koeberg emergency response plan, and makes submissions and presentations to formal government processes on nuclear power. It engages with regulators, government departments and utilities, gives public talks and presentations, and works with schools and community groups to raise awareness of nuclear risks. It operates mainly in and around Cape Town, and has taken part in international nuclear-related conferences and events.
